Hobart Hurricanes Defeats Melbourne Stars by 24 Runs

AUSTRALIA: Hobart Hurricanes defeats Melbourne Stars by 24 runs in the 19th game of Big Bash League 2021. Hobart Hurricanes jumped to the 3rd spot in the points table after winning this match. In this match after winning the toss, Hobart Hurricanes decided to bat first.

Hobart Hurricanes were off to a flying start

Hobart Hurricanes had a superb opening start as their openers, Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott attacked the Melbourne Stars bowling line up right from the very first over.

The pair scored 14 runs in the first over and added 52 runs in the mandatory powerplay. Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade stitched up a 93 runs partnership for the opening wicket.

Nathan Coulter-Nile broke the partnership by removing Matthew Wade who scored 39 runs off 27 deliveries which included 2 fours and 2 sixes and Hobart Hurricanes were 93/1 after 9.3 overs.

Ben McDermott’s half-century

D Arcy Short joined Ben McDermott in the middle after Matthew Wade got out. They both added 22 runs. Ben McDermott got out after playing a splendid knock of 67 runs off 43 deliveries which included 4 fours and 4 sixes. After the fall of Ben McDermott, Hobart Hurricanes were 115/2 after 13.1 overs.

Peter Handscomb joined D Arcy Short in the middle and they both stitched up a 35 runs partnership. D Arcy Short scored 26 runs off 24 deliveries and Peter Handscomb scored 12 runs off 12 deliveries and when they both got out in quick successions, Hobart Hurricanes were 157/4 after 17.5 overs.

In the last 2 overs, Tim David played a good cameo knock in which he scored 22 runs off 12 deliveries which included 1 four and 1 six, and helped Hobart Hurricanes post a strong total of 180/6 after 20 overs.

For Melbourne Stars, Andre Russell picked up 3 wickets, Nathan Coulter-Nile took 2 wickets and Brody Couch took 1 wicket.

Marcus Stoinis and Joe Clarke gave Melbourne Stars a decent start as they both added 37 runs for the opening wicket. Marcus Stoinis got out after scoring 18 runs off 16 deliveries which included 1 four and 1 six and Melbourne Stars were 37/1 after 5.2 overs.

After the fall of 1st wicket Melbourne Stars skipper Glenn Maxwell came out to bat but Maxwell couldn’t stay at the crease much longer as he got out after scoring just 12 runs off 9 deliveries and Melbourne Stars were 55/2 after 7.4 overs.

After that Joe Burns and Joe Clarke stitched up 55 runs partnerships. Joe Clarke also brought up his half-century. Just when Joe Clarke was looking to switch gears, D Arcy Short got his wicket and Joe Clarke got out after scoring 52 runs off 40 deliveries which included 2 fours and 3 sixes. Joe Burns (22) also departed shortly after Joe Clarke and Melbourne Stars were 112/4 after 13.3 overs.

After the fall of 4 wickets, the dangerous Andre Russell and Hilton Cartwright came out to reconstruct the Melbourne Stars innings. The duo put up a 27 runs stand. Hobart Hurricanes bowler Nathan Ellis took the wicket of Andre Russell to take the game away from the Melbourne Stars. Andre Russell got out after scoring 12 runs off 13 deliveries which included 2 fours and Melbourne Stars were 139/5 after 17.4 overs.

Melbourne Stars lost quick wickets

After the wicket of Andre Russell, the Melbourne Stars batting lineup got destroyed by the Hurricanes bowlers. Melbourne Stars lost 4 wickets for just 16 runs and they finished at 156/9 after 20 overs. For Melbourne Stars, Hilton Cartwright played a good knock of 26 runs off 18 deliveries which included 2 fours and 1 six but it wasn’t enough as Hobart Hurricanes won the match by 24 runs.

For Hobart Hurricanes, Riley Meredith and Thomas Rogers took 3 wickets each, Nathan Ellis took 2 wickets and D Arcy Short took 1 wicket.
