Lionel Messi Wins FIFA’s Best Men’s Player Award for the Seventh Time

FRANCE: Football superstar Lionel Messi has won FIFA’s best men’s player award for the seventh time in 14 years, beating out contenders Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema.

FIFA presented the awards on Monday in Paris, and Messi attributed his win to fulfilling his lifelong dream of winning the World Cup with Argentina, which he achieved last year.

Messi said that every footballer dreams of winning the World Cup and that very few could fulfil it. “I’m thankful to God for being able to do it,” he added. 

Messi also broke a record he shared with Cristiano Ronaldo, making the men’s world best XI for the 16th time, alongside other talented players like Virgil van Dijk, Luka Modric, and Erling Haaland.

Mbappé, who was seeking his first best player award from FIFA, was considered Messi’s heir apparent on the world stage, but Messi’s win puts any talk of a passing of the torch on hold. 

Real Madrid star Benzema won the more prestigious Ballon d’Or in October, before the World Cup. However, Messi’s performance in the tournament won him the Golden Ball trophy awarded by FIFA for the World Cup’s best player.

In the women’s category, Spain’s Alexia Putellas won the best player award for the second year in a row, despite being injured days before the Euro and missing the tournament. Putellas scored 34 goals across all football matches last season.

England’s women’s goalkeeper Mary Earps won the women’s goalkeeper award, while Argentina’s Emiliano Martnez, who won the World Cup, was named the best men’s goalkeeper.

The event paid tribute to soccer legend Pelé, who died late last year at age 82 following a battle with colon cancer. 

FIFA presented Pelé’s wife, Marcia Aoki, with a trophy honouring the soccer great from the hands of former Brazil striker Ronaldo.

INDIA: Indian electric vehicle manufacturer, Olectra Greentech, has announced its collaboration with Reliance as a technology partner to develop a hydrogen bus that could revolutionize the country’s public transportation sector.

The 12-metre low-floor bus can seat up to 49 passengers, excluding the driver. According to the company, a single hydrogen fill can allow the bus to travel up to 400 km, and the refilling process takes only 15 minutes. 

The type-4 hydrogen cylinders are installed on the bus and can withstand temperatures between -20 and +85 degrees Celsius. 

The bus will generate only water as tailpipe emissions when it comes to emissions, making it a fully carbon-free alternative to traditional public transportation.

Olectra Greentech, a part of the MEIL Group, has been a pioneer in the Indian electric vehicle manufacturing sector since 2000. 

The company has also been India’s principal silicone rubber and composite insulators manufacturer for power transmission and distribution networks.

“The auto company is planning the commercial launch within a year,” said the company in a statement.

The launch of the hydrogen bus has already created a buzz in the stock market, with Olectra Greentech’s shares surging by 16% to touch a day’s high level of Rs 558.5 apiece on the BSE. At 3 PM, the stock was up almost 11% to Rs 533.5 per share.

This new offering from Olectra Greentech and Reliance is a step forward in reducing India’s carbon footprint and promoting the use of clean energy in public transportation. 

The hydrogen bus will provide an efficient and eco-friendly mode of transportation for commuters while also contributing to India’s target of reducing carbon emissions by 33-35% by 2030.

COVID-19 Originated from Wuhan Lab Funded by Dr. Anthony Fauci, New Study Concludes

UNITED STATES: In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a theory emerged that the virus may have originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

While initially dismissed by many as a conspiracy theory, this hypothesis has gained increasing attention in recent months as more evidence has come to light.

On February 9th, 2022, a group of scientists published a study that concluded that it is “extremely likely” that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan. The study, based on an analysis of the virus’ genetic data, points to several features of the virus that suggest its manipulation in a laboratory.

One of the critical pieces of evidence cited in the study is the presence of a “furin cleavage site” in the virus, which is not common in naturally occurring viruses, especially in the coronavirus found in bats.  The site is thought to enhance the virus’s ability to infect human cells and has been the subject of much speculation about its origins. 

The study’s authors argue that the presence of this site is consistent with the virus’ creation through gain-of-function research, a controversial technique that involves modifying viruses to make them more infectious or deadly in order to understand their behaviour better.

The idea that COVID-19 may have originated from a laboratory in Wuhan is not new and has been the subject of much debate and controversy since the beginning of the pandemic.

Pirelli Responds to Lewis Hamilton’s Concerns over Upcoming F1 Tyre Blanket Rule

BAHRAIN: Pirelli’s head, Mario Isola, has responded to safety concerns raised by Lewis Hamilton over the removal of tyre blankets in F1. The racing organisation has prioritised sustainability and plans to outright ban tyre warmers beginning with the 2024 F1 season.

Teams have already seen the maximum temperature allowed drop as well as a decrease in the permitted time when using them, but Pirelli and Formula 1 are planning to do more.

Lewis Hamilton had tested the proposed 2024 compound earlier this year and believed it was “dangerous” and “pointless” to ban the blankets.

Isola clarified that Hamilton tested the tyres in very cold temperatures and that the rubber he used was not the final product.

He stated that the idea to remove blankets was discussed years ago and that it is a common thought among the FIA, F1, teams, Pirelli, and promoters to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

Isola stated that any step to make the sport more sustainable is important, and one of these steps is to remove blankets, to avoid using electricity to warm up the tyre before using it. 

The organisation tested some wet weather tyres before the Christmas break and found a new compound that is able to work without blankets.

In cold conditions, they made a comparison with the old tyre and blankets, and the comments were positive.

The Pirelli boss stated that developing tyres that are usable without blankets is a big technical challenge.

He stated that they need time to develop the tyres and have a plan, as well as an agreement to analyse the data in July.

Hamilton had raised concerns that drivers would use more fuel to get the tyres up to the right temperature, something that he suggested would negate any benefit of getting rid of the blankets.

Isola accepted that, but said it was a balance. He stated that if you need three, four, or five laps to find the grip, you use more fuel, and that should be accounted for when calculating the removal of blankets.

Isola’s response seems to have addressed the concerns raised by Hamilton and other drivers.

The movement towards sustainability is an important goal for the sport, and the removal of tyre warmers is just one step in that direction.

The organisation needs to make sure that safety isn’t put at risk in order to reach this goal, and it looks like Pirelli is doing what it needs to do to make sure this happens.

As machines become increasingly adept at understanding and processing human language, the question arises: can they truly grasp the complexities of language, including the paradoxical statements that lie at its core?

At its core, the Liar Paradox involves a self-referential statement that contradicts itself. For example, the statement “this statement is false” creates a paradox, as it is neither true nor false. 

The Liar Paradox may seem like an esoteric and purely philosophical problem, but it has important implications for AI.

One of the critical challenges in developing AI systems that can truly understand language is teaching them to deal with the ambiguities, contradictions, and paradoxes that arise in natural language. 

These paradoxes require going beyond simple rule-based systems and developing algorithms that can handle the complex and nuanced nature of human language.

The Liar Paradox presents a particular challenge in this regard, as it seems to defy the rules of logic and truth that underpin many AI systems. 

If machines are programmed to seek out the truth and avoid contradictions, then how can they deal with statements that seem to be both true and false at the same time?

One approach to this problem is to develop more sophisticated algorithms that can handle the complexities of self-reference and paradoxical statements. 

Some researchers have suggested that machines could be programmed to “tolerate” certain contradictions and exceptions to the rules of logic, much like humans do.

Another approach is to try to reframe the problem in a way that machines can more easily understand. The reframing of problems might involve breaking down complex sentences into simpler, more logical statements that machines can process.

US and Russian Military Engage in Friendly Exchange at UAE Weapons Expo

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Despite the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Russian weapons contractors reportedly visited the US stand at a weapons expo in Abu Dhabi, UAE, where they checked out the US-provided FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system.

Ukrainian forces have used the weapon to destroy Russian tanks. Media reported that the exchange was friendly, with at least one Russian reportedly picking up a Javelin and exchanging patches.

The Naval Defence and Security Exposition in Abu Dhabi saw displays from several countries showcasing their weaponry and other combat systems. 

A few yards separated the US Army soldiers and Russian weapons contractors. The interaction between the two groups may seem unusual given the deadly weapons the US has provided to Ukraine to use against Russian forces. 

The Javelin and other US weapons, such as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), have been instrumental in helping Ukrainian forces hold back the Putin-led country’s invasion.

Military experts have previously lauded the Javelin as a crucial tool in allowing Ukrainian forces to defend against the Russian military’s onslaught of tanks and heavy armour. 

The weapon uses an infrared guidance system to track a target’s light emission and delivers a high-explosive anti-tank warhead. 

Despite the critical role the Javelin has played in Ukraine’s defence, the US has faced criticism for providing lethal weapons to the country, with some arguing it could escalate the conflict further.

While the friendly interaction between US and Russian forces may seem unusual given the ongoing conflict, it is not an isolated incident. 

Last October, the US and Russian troops crossed paths in Syria, where they exchanged patches, shook hands, and even posed for photographs together. 

The US and Putin-led country have backed different sides of the country’s ongoing 12-year-long brutal civil war. 

While the exchange last fall was friendly, other exchanges between US and Russian forces in Syria have been less so, such as when the soldiers of Putin-led nation ran American troops off the road, causing injuries.

While Putin-led nation has criticised the provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine, it has undoubtedly played a significant role in helping Ukrainian forces hold back the Putin-led nation’s invasion. 

As the conflict’s magnitude continues to escalate, it is unknown how much further it will draw the US and Putin-led nation into a face-off and what the outcome will be.

BAHRAIN: Bahrain’s Sakhir F1 circuit witnessed impressive performances during the second day of pre-season testing, with several drivers setting early benchmarks.

Carlos Sainz set the morning session’s fastest time on C3 tyres, with 1m 32.486s. However, the reigning F1 world champion, Max Verstappen, soon took over with a flying effort that put him at the top of the leaderboard.

The real excitement came in the evening session under the floodlights when Zhou Guanyu eclipsed Verstappen’s time by 0.040 seconds with a lap time of 1 minute, and 31.610 seconds while driving on soft tyres.

But Zhou’s session had to end early because his car wouldn’t go into first gear at the end of the pit lane with only 10 minutes left in the day.

Earlier in the afternoon session, Mercedes hit trouble when George Russell’s W14 stopped with a hydraulic issue, bringing out the red flag.

Russell finished 13th overall, having tallied 26 laps in the afternoon, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton set 72 laps for P15.

Hamilton’s morning runs were briefly interrupted by floor damage after running over kerbs and the resulting repairs.

Fernando Alonso did a great job for Aston Martin. He completed more than 130 laps and came in third overall, ahead of both Nyck de Vries of AlphaTauri and Nico Hulkenberg of Haas.

Carlos Sainz finished sixth on the leaderboard after a successful morning stint that saw him clock 70 laps in the Ferrari.

Charles Leclerc, his teammate, took over and added over 60 laps to finish eighth overall. Logan Sargeant of Williams finished seventh and led the mileage stakes, having driven over 150 laps.

Sargeant’s session ended earlier than scheduled when he rolled into the pits with 15 minutes remaining due to what seemed to be an electrical issue.

The team later revealed that they were having Sargeant practise exiting the car in the event of a problem, during which an electrical issue sprung up.

Oscar Piastri finished ninth in the afternoon, while Lando Norris was 16th overall after a productive morning session.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly rounded out the top 10, 1.5 seconds off the top spot, with Kevin Magnussen of Haas in 11th and Esteban Ocon of AlphaTauri in 12th after lapping 49 times in the morning.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez split the Mercedes after setting 76 laps in the morning session. AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda drove the most laps in the morning, 85, before giving the car to Nyck de Vries.

Overall, it was a successful day of F1 pre-season testing, with several drivers showing impressive performances.

However, it remains to be seen how the teams will perform once the 2023 F1 season officially starts. The last day of testing will be crucial for the teams as they fine-tune their cars ahead of the opening race in Bahrain on March 28.

Russia Withdraws from START Treaty: Implications for Global Security

RUSSIA: Russia’s recent announcement of withdrawing from the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) has raised concerns about the future of nuclear arms control between the United States and Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the decision in a lengthy address to the nation, reportedly made days before the first anniversary of the Ukraine war.

Putin said that the US wants to inspect Russia’s military facilities, a requirement under the treaty, while openly admitting that its goal is Russia’s strategic defeat.

Russia’s withdrawal from the treaty is also attributed to US President Joe Biden’s recent visit to Ukraine. He criticised Russia for its show of force and praised Ukraine and the Western allies for fending off repeated acts of aggression from Russia.

This treaty, signed in 2010, was a critical tool for reducing the number of nuclear weapons held by the two nations and promoting international security.

The START treaty was a bilateral agreement that aimed to limit and reduce the number of strategic nuclear weapons held by the United States and Russia. 

The treaty allowed regular inspections and data exchanges between the two nations to verify compliance with the treaty’s provisions. 

The START Treaty also established a ceiling of 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads for each country, a significant reduction from the Cold War-era levels.
