Southern Africa Tops In COVID-19 Upsurge

At country level, South Africa has got the highest new cases of 130,848 followed by Tunisia with 17,554, Morocco with of 9,000 cases

ETHIOPIA. Addis Ababa: Southern Africa has the highest proportion of new cases of COVID-19 for the past four weeks, according to the African Union.


In its latest continental report of the pandemic, Southern Africa has 70 per cent followed by North Africa which has 18 percent and west Africa has 7 percent.

East Africa has 4 per cent while Central Africa has the remaining 1 percent.


The latest report covers a period from 14 December last year to 10 January.

At the country level, South Africa has got the highest new cases of 130,848 followed by Tunisia with 17,554, Morocco with 9,000 cases, Nigeria with 8,900, and Egypt with 7,605 cases.

Africa overall has seen an increase of 18 percent over the stated period .

222,753 new cases were recorded in the continent representing an increase of 32 percent.

5464 new deaths were recorded in the same period .


For the continent’s highly populated countries, Ethiopia had a decrease of new cases on average of 6 percent and Kenya a decrease of 10 percent on average.


But DR Congo had an increase of 13 percent on average, Nigeria has an increase of 25 percent on average and Egypt and South Africa both with an increase of 30 per cent on average.

Globally, the pandemic has claimed 1.9 million deaths and registered 90 million cases.
