Tropical Storm Lee Threatens Leeward Islands with Major Hurricane Status

UNITED STATES: Tropical Storm Lee, currently swirling in the Atlantic Ocean, is raising alarm bells among meteorologists and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) as it shows signs of potential transformation into an “extremely dangerous major hurricane” by the upcoming weekend. The NHC has issued a stern warning as it closely monitors Lee’s trajectory.

The storm, which originated in the central tropical Atlantic and officially gained tropical storm status on September 5th, is currently positioned about 1,200 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. 

With winds reaching approximately 70 mph and a west-northwest movement of 14 mph, Lee is rapidly intensifying, prompting concerns among experts.

According to the NHC’s forecast on September 6th, Lee is expected to reach hurricane strength very soon and could escalate into a major hurricane within the next 48 hours. 

Although continued strengthening is anticipated, the unpredictable nature of eyewall replacement cycles could lead to fluctuations in intensity over the weekend and early next week.

Lee’s path is projected to take it towards the Leeward Islands, encompassing the U.S. Virgin Islands and the region where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean Sea. This has stirred anxiety among residents and local authorities, who are preparing for the possibility of a significant hurricane impact.

Favorable environmental conditions, including ample moisture, low wind shear, and exceptionally warm waters along Lee’s projected route, are factors contributing to its development. However, meteorologists stress that it is not anticipated to affect the United States at this time, offering some respite to coastal communities.

If Lee attains wind speeds exceeding 74 mph, it will be officially categorized as a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Lee’s potential transformation into a major hurricane would make it the fourth such occurrence this season, following the paths of Don, Franklin, and Idalia.

Authorities and residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay vigilant and closely monitor updates from the NHC as Lee continues its trajectory through the Atlantic.

In a departure from the conventional hinge-based mechanisms seen on foldable phones and laptops, Apple seems to be leaning towards bending the glass panel itself, while the lower part of the iMac would house a sliding keyboard and trackpad.

What’s more, the back of this innovative machine would incorporate a rear stand, serving as both a support structure and an input hub, allowing users to easily connect peripherals such as Bluetooth mice or external displays.

One of the standout features of this foldable iMac is its adjustable angle, catering to users’ ergonomic preferences. This design feature, coupled with the foldable lower part, makes it a highly portable and space-saving option for users. 

However, it appears that there may be limitations when it comes to changing the display’s height, and VESA compatibility is not mentioned in the patent. Additionally, the patent does not make any reference to a built-in battery.

While Apple is known for filing numerous patents each year, many of which remain concepts, this latest revelation provides a tantalizing glimpse into the tech giant’s innovative thinking. 

Recent patent filings have also hinted at a VR headset that connects to iPhones, motion-based voice detection for Siri, and the possibility of MacBooks and desktops sporting a FaceID-compatible notch.

Rare Gigantic Jets of Lightning Illuminate Puerto Rico Sky as Hurricane Franklin Looms

PUERTO RICO: Puerto Rico-based photographer Frankie Lucena was capturing images of a passing storm system, which would soon evolve into the ongoing Hurricane Franklin, when he witnessed a rare natural phenomenon: Several enormous bolts of lightning shot straight upward out of a storm cloud and halted just below the edge of space.

Upward-moving lightning bolts, known as gigantic jets, are the rarest and most powerful type of lightning, occurring as infrequently as 1,000 times a year and carrying more than 50 times the power of a typical lightning bolt.

These inverted bolts can ascend more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) above Earth’s surface, reaching the bottom of the ionosphere, the extensive layer of electrically charged particles where Earth’s atmosphere meets outer space. (Space technically commences at 62 miles, or 100 km, above sea level, while the ionosphere extends from approximately 50 to 400 miles, or 80 to 640 km, above sea level.)

Though rare, gigantic jets are not an uncommon occurrence during Atlantic hurricane season, with reports most frequent in tropical regions, particularly during rapidly intensifying tropical storms like Franklin, as per an August 2022 study in the journal Science Advances.

Scientists have only been aware of this phenomenon for about 20 years, and many aspects of it remain a mystery, including why the bolts shoot upward into the sky instead of striking downward to the ground.

The colossal upward-flying bolts might result from some form of obstruction preventing lightning from escaping through the cloud’s underside, as suggested by the authors of the 2022 study. However, the precise mechanism remains unknown.

This year may offer more opportunities to observe and study these bolts, as the Atlantic hurricane season is now in full swing.

Franklin has since moved north toward Bermuda and intensified into the first major hurricane of the 2023 season, according to the National Weather Service.

While experts caution about potentially life-threatening rip currents along the East Coast of the United States, it’s important to note that Hurricane Franklin is not currently projected to make landfall.

On August 30, Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida as a Category 2 storm, resulting in at least two confirmed deaths.

The storm is being fueled by off-the-charts ocean temperatures, which have broken every record since satellite measurements began in the 1980s.

These record-high temperatures have arisen from a combination of human-caused climate change and an El Niño event, which is forecasted to significantly surpass the last strong event in early 2016.

GERMANY: Astronomers at the European Space Agency have uncovered a groundbreaking method to detect one of the universe’s most ancient and elusive features: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO).

These subtle cosmic wrinkles, remnants from the first 380,000 years of the universe’s existence, hold vital clues about the Big Bang and the universe’s expansion. The innovative approach focuses on the shapes and orientations of galaxies rather than just observing galaxy clusters, offering a promising cosmological probe that has long been overlooked.

Astrophysicists at the University of Córdoba in Spain led a study that looked at the odd orientations and stretch levels of about a million galaxies. By identifying galaxies that deviated from the norm, they pinpointed areas where Baryon Acoustic Oscillations were concentrated.

This novel detection method promises to provide more accurate measurements of galaxy locations and distances within the universe. It could significantly enhance our ability to map the cosmos and further our understanding of the universe’s expansion, a phenomenon that remains shrouded in mystery due to its accelerating rate.

Moreover, this technique offers a potential solution to quantify the enigmatic dark matter and dark energy in the universe, with the latter suspected to be the driving force behind the universe’s accelerating expansion.

While this is not the first attempt to detect BAO, it represents a significant advancement in our cosmic understanding. The European Space Agency’s Euclid telescope, recently launched with the mission to hunt for dark matter and dark energy, is set to measure some of these signals across the universe from its vantage point approximately one million miles above Earth.
